Training academy

Train tutorsby doing.Clear themto teach.

New tutors sit through long videos and slide decks, and owners still cannot tell who is ready to teach Year 10 maths. XTutio's academy gives tutors short lessons they do something in, subject tests that clear them for a subject at a year level, certificates in your centre's own colours, and active time counted honestly, in the portal they already use.

Two family updates

Which update would you rather a family received after this lesson?

Update A

Lovely session, great effort, see you next week!

Update B

Today we worked on solving simultaneous equations by elimination. Mia was unsure about the sign changes at the start, and by the end of the lesson she was getting them right on her own, which is real progress. Word problems are still slow: she can solve the equations once they are written, but setting them up from the words takes her a long time. Next lesson we will practise turning a word problem into a pair of equations before solving.

Interactive lessons

Training tutors actually finish: short lessons, with your centre in them.

69 courses: 52 for tutors and office staff, 17 for parents. 9 kinds of block a reader does something in, from a quick check to a session that branches on every choice.

Who do you ask?

A family wants to move next week's lessonA question about your payThe app will not let you do something
  • Six to ten minutes a lesson

Tutors fit training between lessons, so long modules never get finished. Each interactive lesson opens with the one sentence to remember, and keeps the reader doing something every few paragraphs.

  • Your campuses, not a placeholder

A lesson about where things are shows your own active campuses, addresses and opening hours, read from your settings.

  • Practice on the real screens

Tasks like saving a wrap-up are checked against the tutor's own account, and a practice incident report goes nowhere but their training record.

  • Written for your centre

Course text names your centre and your safety contact where it needs to, filled in for each reader. Child safety and compliance courses are your centre's own.

Every block, in the app's own words

  • Quick check

A question with a reason behind every wrong answer, so a miss teaches.

  • Worked example

One step at a time: the tutor thinks of the next move before it shows.

  • Spot the error

A student's working, line by line. Tap the first line that goes wrong.

  • Sort it

Drop each card in the right group, then see which ones moved.

  • Put it in order

The steps of a routine, shuffled, to put back in order.

  • Mark it

A real answer to mark against the criteria, then the marker's own reasons.

  • Annotate it

Tap the parts of a text that do the work, and see what an expert picked.

  • Compare

Two versions side by side: pick the better one, then say why.

  • What would you do?

A session that branches on each choice, with the best path shown at the end.

Subject tests

Know who can teach what: a test that clears a tutor to teach.

19 clearances, each a subject at a year level: Primary maths, Years 3 and 4, or English Advanced. Pass the test and the portal knows who can teach what.

  • Drawn fresh, marked on the server

A test with its answers in the page proves nothing. Each attempt draws its questions on the server and sends them without the answers. Options are shuffled every time, and numbers are marked by value.

  • Attempts with a cool-down

Each test allows a set number of attempts a cycle and a wait after a fail. A pass completes the course and writes the clearance.

  • Checked when a lesson is booked

Admins should not have to remember who is cleared for what. Book a tutor for a subject and year they are not cleared for, and the portal warns, or refuses if your centre chooses to block. Cover and matching prefer cleared tutors.

  • Certificates with a code

Every pass earns a certificate that prints on one A4 page, with a code that identifies it. A subject clearance wears the gold design.

Question 7 of 25Pass mark 80%

A student writes 3,405 as “three thousand and forty-five”. What is the most useful thing to ask first?

What is the value of the 4?
Can you read it again more slowly?
How many thousands are there?
Can you write it in words for me?

  • The base, in one place

New tutors want to start teaching, not wade through everything. 6 courses, about 6 hours, before a tutor's first lesson: your welcome, three child safety courses, compliance essentials and their first session.

  • Subject templates on top

Primary maths, senior English, OC and selective and more. Each includes the base and adds the subject tests, due within 28 days.

  • Yours to change

A starter is copied in as your centre's own template. Add courses, change what is required, and apply it when you invite someone.

  • Everything else is a library

Courses outside a tutor's templates stay open as optional study in their own time, so nobody is made to sit what they do not need.

Training time

Active minutes. Not open tabs.

Time is only counted while someone is actually working through a lesson or a test, so the minutes you see, and the minutes your pay run pays, are minutes spent learning.

One hour with the course open

42 active minutes counted

Reading, answering, touching the pageAway, another tab, or idle for two minutes
  • Active time only

Owners should not pay for a tab left open, and tutors should be paid for real work. The page counts a beat every 30 seconds while it is open, in front and touched in the last 2 minutes. A tab left open overnight counts nothing.

  • A ceiling on every lesson

A lesson earns at most 4 times its own length, and a test no more than its time limit.

  • Paid in your pay run

Turn paid training on and each pay run adds a training line per tutor for their active minutes on required courses, each day paid once.

  • Paid or own time, said up front

Every item in a template says whether all of its time is paid training or only the test, and the tutor sees the same line on the course.

  • Minutes on every course

Admins see each person's active minutes on every course, beside what they have finished and what is due.

Live training sessions

Inductions, workshops and shadowing.

Some training needs people together, and chasing replies by text wastes an admin's week. Schedule those sessions beside the courses; invitees answer in the portal, and the host marks who came.

  • Three ways to meet

Inductions organised by group text lose people. Run them in the app's own meeting room, on a link you paste, or face to face at a campus, with a room if you want one.

  • Answers that hold a seat

Invitees answer Going or Can't make it. A full group says so, and the same answer twice changes nothing.

  • Reminders that stay right

Invitations, reminders, changes and cancellations go through the notification queue, and each is checked again before it is sent.

  • Required sessions paid too

With paid training on, the pay run pays each tutor who attended a required session once, and its host for the scheduled length, without paying the same day twice.

  • Attendance, marked once

The host marks Present, Late or Absent. Once anyone is marked, the session's time and place are fixed.

Before you hire

Hire on what they can do: send an applicant the real subject test.

From the application's page, make a one-attempt link to the same subject test your tutors sit. The applicant does it on their own phone; you see how they went.

  • One link, one attempt

A good interview does not show whether someone can do the maths. A link to a subject test lasts 7 days by default (up to 30) and works once. It is shown once and sent only when you press send.

  • Timed by the server

20 questions in 25 minutes by default. The countdown follows the server's clock, and a late answer is refused.

  • Score, topics and focus

Staff see the score, the topics, the time taken, how often the page lost focus and the wrong answers. The applicant never sees a score.

  • The answers stay private

Staff never see a right answer or an explanation, because the same questions clear your own tutors.

The parent academy

Fewer calls to the front desk: families learn the portal too.

  • A separate academy for families

Parents who do not understand the portal ring the front desk. They get their own Training page with courses written for them, and never see a staff course.

  • No tests, nothing sold

Parent courses have no tests and no prices. They explain the portal, lessons, paying and how to help at home.

In short

Staff training

XTutio's training academy gives tutors short lessons they answer rather than scroll, subject tests that clear them to teach a subject at a year level, and certificates in the centre's own colours. Active time is counted honestly, inside the portal tutors already use. It pairs with Child safety, where checks at booking are explained, and the training academy and payroll guide. Tutors teach online in XLesson once cleared.

Questions centres ask

How long is a training lesson?

Six to ten minutes, with something to answer, sort or mark every few minutes.

What is a subject test?

A test drawn fresh for each tutor that clears them to teach a subject at a year level. A booking can check it.

Can we write our own courses?

Yes. A centre's own courses sit beside the platform's, and its training templates are its to change.

See the academy on your own centre.
