Accessibility at the XTutio operating company
Last updated: 20 September 2026
This document names an operating company that is being formed.
A company is being registered to operate this service. Until that is done, treat the operator named here as provisional. Everything below about how personal information is collected, stored and deleted describes what the software actually does, and none of it changes when the company name does.
Our commitment
We want every student, parent and tutor to be able to learn here, including people who use a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification, or who have dyslexia or a vision, hearing or motor difference. We are working to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, and we treat accessibility as an ongoing commitment rather than a one-off project.
What we have built
- Read-aloud everywhere: Australian-English text-to-speech reads words, sentences and whole reading passages on request.
- Dyslexia-friendly reading: an optional dyslexia-friendly font, adjustable reading text size, and a reading-comfort setting.
- Reading-age labels: every book in the reading library shows its reading age so texts can be matched to the reader.
- Full dark mode: a complete dark theme (and a system option) for low-light and contrast needs.
- Keyboard and structure: interactive controls are real buttons and links. Every portal - student, parent, tutor, admin, teacher and typing - opens with a "skip to main content" link and has exactly one main region, so a screen reader announces one place to start and a keyboard user can get there in a single press.
- Touch-friendly: a mobile-first layout, with the header, navigation and account controls in every portal meeting a minimum tap-target size of 44 by 44 pixels.
- No pinch-zoom on forms: form fields use at least a 16 pixel font on phones and tablets, so focusing one does not zoom the page in mobile Safari.
- Reduced motion: animations are minimised for people who prefer reduced motion.
- Captions: narrated lesson videos include word-synced on-screen captions.
Known limitations
We are honest about where we still have work to do:
- A few interactive activities need a pointer or a microphone - for example letter-jumble and the optional read-aloud fluency check - and currently offer limited screen-reader support. Equivalent non-interactive practice is always available.
- Some downloadable or uploaded documents may not yet be fully tagged for screen readers.
- Some dense staff-facing tables still place controls closer together than our 44 by 44 pixel minimum. The student, parent and tutor screens are the ones we test first and most.
- Colour contrast has not been measured pair by pair across every theme. We have designed for it in both light and dark mode, but we have not yet proved it.
- A formal independent WCAG 2.1 AA audit is planned; the statements above are based on our own internal testing.
