Using your centre's own words

Rename student, tutor, lesson, centre, campus and family so the portal uses the words your centre uses.

Updated 18 October 2026

Why this exists

If your centre says coach, session or studio, the standard words can make the portal feel like someone else's system, to your staff and to families. As the centre owner or admin, you set your own words for six terms, and the main screens and emails use them. Families and staff read the same language you use every day.

Some centres say "coach" instead of tutor, "session" instead of lesson or "studio" instead of centre. You can set your own words for six terms, and the portal uses them on its main screens and emails.

Before you start

You need settings.edit and two-step sign-in. Nothing changes until someone sets a word.

Set your words

  1. Go to Settings > Your centre and find Your words.
  2. For each term you want to change (student, tutor, lesson, centre, campus, family), type the singular. The plural is worked out for you; type your own if it is wrong.
  3. Leave a box blank to keep the standard word, or press Standard to go back to it.
  4. Check How it will read, which shows sample sentences with your words.
  5. Save.

A word must be 3 to 24 letters, one or two words, with no numbers.

Where your words appear

  • The staff menus and page names.
  • The Today page, the calendar and the lessons list.
  • The parent portal's menu and welcome line.
  • The enrolment form.
  • Enrolment, invitation and lesson reminder emails.

What does not change

  • Web addresses, roles, permissions and settings keep their usual names.
  • Other screens, such as finance, reports, training and the library, and the student portal still use the standard words for now.
  • Text messages, saved comms templates and documents you wrote.
  • Teachworks data, past invoices and reports from before the change.
  • Names: a centre called "Tutor Hub" keeps its name.
