Several tutors on one lesson

Add a second or third tutor to a lesson, such as a workshop or a large group, and pay each of them.

Updated 18 October 2026

Why this exists

A big group or a new tutor learning the ropes sometimes needs more than one adult in the room. Where it is switched on, you can add up to four extra tutors to a lesson, each checked like the lead and each paid. The lesson keeps one lead tutor, so the roll and the family's charge stay simple.

A lesson keeps one lead tutor. Where your centre has it switched on, you can add up to four more tutors to help run it, and each is paid.

Before you start

You need permission to edit lessons. The lesson must still be scheduled. If the card Tutors on this lesson says "Several tutors on one lesson is not switched on yet", it is not on for your centre.

Steps

  1. Open the lesson from Scheduling > Lessons.
  2. In Tutors on this lesson, choose a tutor.
  3. Choose how they are paid: at their own rate, or a set amount for the lesson.
  4. Press Add to this lesson.
  5. To take someone off, remove them from the same card.

When you book a single lesson on the New lesson form, an Other tutors block lets you add them straight away. For a repeating lesson, add them lesson by lesson.

What an extra tutor gets

  • The lesson shows on their calendar and Today page.
  • They can read the lesson's notes and files and write this lesson's notes.
  • In the online classroom they join as a tutor.
  • They are paid once for the lesson, even if the lead tutor's pay is already in another pay run.

Good to know

  • The roll is still marked by the lead tutor, the covering tutor or the office. An extra tutor cannot mark it.
  • Each extra tutor is checked like the lead: compliance, a current working with children check for a home lesson, clashes with their other lessons, and leave.
  • The family is charged exactly as before, and family screens show the lead tutor.
  • Adding and removing is not possible while your centre's lessons are managed in Teachworks.
