Matching tutors by distance for home lessons

Tutors enter the suburb they live in, and Find a tutor and cover suggestions rank who is closest to a family's home.

Why this exists

Sending a tutor across town to a home lesson when another lives nearby wastes their time and the family's. Where it is switched on, distance matching ranks tutors who live closer higher when you look for a home lesson tutor or cover. Tutors only ever give their suburb, never their street.

For home lessons, it helps to send the tutor who lives nearest. Distance matching is off until it is switched on for your centre. If you do not see it, ask your centre's admin.

Tutors: where you live

  1. Open Settings > Where you live.
  2. Enter your suburb, state and postcode. Never your street.
  3. If you like, add how far you will travel, in minutes or kilometres.

Your suburb is shown to you and nobody else. Staff who book lessons see only a rough distance, such as "about 12 min away".

Staff: finding a tutor

  • On Find a tutor, tick that the lesson is at the student's home. Tutors closer to the family rank higher, with "about N min away" beside them.
  • Cover suggestions for a home lesson show the same distance.

How it works

  • It uses drive time where your centre has Google Maps connected, otherwise a rough estimate between suburb centres. The label always says "about".
  • Nobody is left out. A tutor with no suburb scores neither higher nor lower. A tutor further than their own limit is marked "(further than they usually travel)".
  • Only home lessons use distance. It is never written into messages to families.
