A subject test for job applicants

Send a tutor applicant a one-time link to a subject test before you hire, and read their result.

Updated 18 October 2026

Why this exists

Hiring a tutor on an interview alone can leave you finding out about gaps in their subject knowledge only after they start teaching. As the person hiring, you can send an applicant the same subject test your own tutors sit and read a clear result before you decide. The applicant needs no account, and you never have to write or mark a test yourself.

Before you hire a tutor, you can send them a one-time link to the same subject test your own tutors sit. The applicant does not need an account.

Before you start

  • You need recruitment.view and the admin role. Other staff see that only an admin can send a subject test.
  • The subject must have a published clearance course.

Send a test

  1. Go to People > Recruitment and open the application.
  2. In the subject test panel, choose the subject and press Create test link.
  3. Copy the link now. For safety it is shown only once.
  4. Press Email it to the applicant to send it from your centre's email, or send the link yourself. Nothing is emailed unless you press the button.

You can switch a link off before it is used.

The rules

  • One attempt per subject per application. Once a link has been started, no new link is made for that subject.
  • The link lasts 7 days by default. You can change how long links last, the time limit and a screening pass mark; new links use the new settings.
  • The test is timed by the server, so a slow connection or a changed clock does not give extra time.

Reading the result

The applicant never sees a score. You see:

  • the score, with Below the pass mark if it is,
  • Score by topic,
  • Time taken,
  • how many times they Left the page,
  • the questions they got wrong and what they gave.

You never see the right answers. The questions are shared with every centre's tutors, so keep them private.
