Page setup, contents and downloading
Set margins and borders, add a table of contents, find words, print, and download as Word or PDF.

Why this exists
A worksheet or letter is only finished when it prints properly or opens cleanly for the person you send it to. Here you set the page, add a table of contents that keeps itself up to date, and download a Word file or a PDF whose words can be searched. Staff can get a document out of the app without fixing it in another program first.
Get a document ready to print or send: the page, the headings, and the file.
Page setup
- Open the document and choose File > Page setup....
- Pick the paper size, which way the page faces, and the margins.
- Add a border with Format > Page border.
- Turn on View > Ruler to drag the margins instead.
Headers, footers and page numbers are under Insert > Header, footer and page numbers....
Table of contents
- Use headings (Title, Heading 1, Heading 2) for your sections.
- Choose Insert > Table of contents.
It updates itself as you add or rename headings. In a Word download it is a real Word table of contents.
Find and replace
Edit > Find... or Edit > Find and replace... (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F). Searching finds whole words, even across bold or italic text.
Download and print
Choose File > Download:
- Word (.docx), keeps comments and suggestions.
- Word, without comments or suggestions, a clean copy.
- PDF (.pdf), the words can be selected and searched in the PDF.
File > Print... prints the page. If your browser drops headers or page numbers, the app prints through a PDF instead.
Good to know
- View > Print layout shows real pages; Web layout shows one long page.
- A worksheet with an answer key has extra download choices for a student copy. See Worksheets and answer keys.
