Learning a language

How the course map works, how lessons teach new words, and how speaking practice works.

Why this exists

This helps you learn a new language a little at a time. You meet a few new words, then practise them until you know them.

If you are learning a language, open Languages and choose it.

The course map

The map shows your lessons in order. Finish one and the next one opens. Lessons you have already done stay open, so you can go back and practise.

In a lesson

  1. You meet a few new words, with a card for each one.
  2. You practise those words before you meet any more.
  3. Sometimes there are tip cards that explain how the language works, and short stories to read.
  4. At the end, words you are learning come back so you remember them.

Speaking practice

  1. Listen to the word or sentence.
  2. Record yourself saying it.
  3. Play it back and compare.

Nobody marks your speaking, and your recording is not sent anywhere. It stays on your device and is thrown away when you move on.

Word cards

When words are ready to practise again, they show as cards in Review.

Good to know

If you do not see Languages, it is not part of your learning yet.
