Spreadsheets

Make a spreadsheet, use formulas, and open or save Excel and CSV files.

Updated 18 October 2026

Why this exists

Mark books, rosters and budgets kept in personal files are hard to share and easy to lose. Spreadsheets live in Documents with your other work, save as you go, and handle the formulas staff already know. You can also import and download spreadsheet files when you need to work with someone outside the app.

Spreadsheets work like Excel or Google Sheets, inside Documents. Use them for mark books, rosters and budgets.

Make one

  1. Open Documents and choose + Spreadsheet.
  2. Give it a title. It saves as you go.

Formulas

Type = in a cell to start a formula. Common ones work as in Excel, including SUM, AVERAGE, IF, IFERROR, VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, COUNTIFS, MAXIFS, TEXTJOIN, STDEV.S and dates with DATE.

The formula helper suggests a formula from a sentence. It sends only your column headings and what kind of values are in them, never the cells themselves.

Excel and CSV

  • Import Excel or CSV... brings in an .xlsx, .csv or .tsv file, up to 15 MB.
  • Download as Excel (.xlsx) keeps styles, number formats, merged cells, column widths, frozen rows, borders and simple colour rules.
  • Download as CSV saves the current sheet as plain values.

An old .xls file (Excel 97 to 2003) cannot be opened. Save it as .xlsx in Excel first.

Good to know

  • Charts sit under the grid and can be added to slides and documents.
  • For drop-down lists, tick boxes and colour scales, see Mark book tools.
